More than two decades after it was introduced to the United States, the Honda CR-V is still the most popular crossover SUV on the market. Drivers of all demographics love the CR-V, and they show it by making the CR-V the top seller year after year. Commuters enjoy the CR-V for its reliability and fuel economy while weekend adventurers love it for its size, strength and durability.
The Honda CR-V was first introduced as a concept in Japan, with the first official model year, the 1997 CR-V, beginning mass production in 1995.
What Does the Acronym Mean?
If you aren’t exactly sure what CR-V stands for, you are in good company.
According to Honda’s Japanese press information, the abbreviation stands for “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle.” However, sales literature from the carmaker in the UK has referred to it as a “Compact Recreational Vehicle,” while many know it as the “Civic Recreational Vehicle” based on its platform.
- This compact crossover, five-door SUV entered into its fourth generation in 2012 and is so popular that it has seen an increase in U.S. sales every year since 2009.
- The CR-V was featured in a Super Bowl commercial in 2012 featuring actor Matthew Broderick paying homage to his classic film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
- The CR-V was the highest selling crossover/SUV in 2014 and 2015 and was still #1 midway through 2016.
The Modern CR-V
The CR-V received its most recent facelift in 2015 and now features a direct injected Earth Dreams engine as well as continuously variable transmission and improved crash performance, making it better and safer than ever before.
The CR-V shines when it comes to performance, offering more elbow room for adults and more space for cargo than most of its competitors. It offers better fuel economy than most crossovers with 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.
Honda’s CR-V features a 2.4 liter, four-cylinder, 185 horsepower engine. It has a top speed of 117 mph and can go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds.
